ePaper with video

Finnish daily breaks barrier between images and video

Today's newspapers publish not only static articles, but also streaming video. But how can you add video to the newspaper in a smart way that doesn't require extra news editor resources?

Requirements
You must have Adobe Reader (from www.adobe.com). If you use Mac or Linux, set Adobe Reader as the default PDF viewer, and not the regular Preview.

You must have QuickTime support (from www.apple.com). If you use Linux, QuickTime is not supported directly. One solution may be MediaPlayerConnectivity, located at https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/446
Rantapohja in Finland found their solution from Scoop. The newspaper located in Haukipudas is the largest local newspaper in Finland, printed in 11,000 copies, distributed 2 days a week. They have been using the Scoop Publishing system for 10 years, and starting spring 2009, they launch a new installation. Among the new components are Scoop PageTrack, Scoop ePaper and Scoop AdWizard.

All pages are editied with InDesign. Wherever a video is available to an article, the editor places the video in the DTP document with the video as a poster. The printed newspaper will automatically have a still image in that box. On the the auto-generated PDF, this image box will be clickable, playing the video. This PDF is used for Scoop ePaper. Thus the readers are offered video as extra value, without any extra editing time in the newsroom.

Test it here!

Follow the first link below to see our test product. Click on the most recent issue, (2009-03-19), go to page 2, view the page as PDF. On this page, both articles with color images have embedded videos. Move your mouse pointer over an image, and the pointer changes to a hand. Click on the image. First, you may be prompted for the Quicktime plugin, then the video starts.

Then, go to page 10, swith to PDF view, click on the ad box named ”Oulun Systema”, and a commercial video plays. These videos are all part of an auto-generated test production, showing the potential with embedded video in Scoop ePaper. The public production starts in May 2009.
